Hope Springs (and Pounces and Allegedly Hits)

This week’s Jagoff is Hope Solo. According to to several media outlets such as CNN, soccer star Hope Solo was arrested on domestic violence charges early Saturday after allegedly assaulting both her sister and nephew at a home in Seattle, Washington. “There was a big party going on at her house. It was an out-of-control situation,” said Kirkland police Lt. Mike Murray, who added that officers were called to the home because of an assault and a noise disturbance. My first thought is why was her nephew at this wild party at 1am in the first place? Why would she allow this at her house?

It seems to be another example of how high-profile athletes ignore the rules and norms of society. Of course there is plenty of blame to go around, Hope Solo is an adult and makes her own decisions. However, what I like to explore is how we as consumers of sports create this atmosphere in which the athletes live. Over consumption and blind adoration drives money and fame into the sports world. It is a world where many athletes do not have the restraint in which to ethically live. If we can just reduce our consumption of sports by lets say 10%, it will send a powerful message and actually improve the sports viewing experience as well as help the athletes that we enjoy watching.
