Can’t You Just Stay Out of Your Own Way?!

I’m all for second chances. I understand to “Err is human.” I say both these things because if I do not, 1 of our 5 loyal readers will misunderstand the point of this post and call me out.

Okay, with that said and without further ado, the winner of this week’s Jagoff of the Week goes to former 49er, Aldon Smith.

Aldon Smith is an idiot and continues to act foolishly off the field. On the field he’s an absolute monster and unstoppable force. It is for this continued excellence in stupidity he wins the Jagoff of the Week Award. Sadly, the preseason for the NFL continues to bring to light these types of stories. Unlike the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award where Aldon finished 2nd, Aldon gets to take home this hardware. There was a latecomer making a strong push for the award, but Ikemefuna “IK” Enemkpali feel just short. Tough break, IK Enemkpali.

Aldon Smith had an extremely bright future in the NFL. He was drafted 7th overall by the 49ers in 2011. During his rookie year he was used mainly as a pass rush specialist. He did his job good enough to come in 2nd in Defensive Rookie of the Year behind Von Miller. During his 2nd season, Aldon had 19.5 sacks and became the fastest player to record 30 sacks. Needless to say, he was on his way to being a superstar.

However, his 2nd season would be the only year he would get to play a full season. Trouble and suspension soon started to happen with regularity. In 2013 he missed 5 games while in rehab for alcohol. In 2014, he missed 9 games due to substance abuse and breaking NFL’s players conduct code. To his credit, he has some pretty interesting charges and grand stories to share. He had a party prematurely cut short due to alleged gang members rushing in and stabbing party goers. This incident ended with gun fire from illegal guns owned by Mr. Smith. He also made the claim to a TSA Agent that he was carrying a bomb while at LAX airport. I’m not sure, but I think I see a pattern trending with Aldon and the law.

Finally, most recently in 2015 Mr. Smith was charged with his 3rd DUI, Hit and Run, and Vandalism. Really, Bro?! Buy a chauffeur!  Fed up, the 49ers finally severed ties with Aldon, but not before they extending their hands to offer help. The 49ers are not the only individuals going public about offering help to Mr. Smith. Ronnie Lott, and Charles Haley both spoke about offering to mentor and help Aldon.

Aldon Smith demonstrates he has a rare talent on the field finding and tackling the quarterback. Off the field he has an equal gift for breaking the law. I am sure some owner will justify giving Aldon Smith yet another chance to play football. However, the one person getting in his way of setting foot onto the football field on Sunday is his self. Let’s hope he recognizes the help he needs and seeks it.
