Jeter the Great

The word most often associated with Derek Jeter is class, and there is no denying that class and Jeter are synonymous. He is the rare athlete in today’s sports world who has navigated the temptations and persuasions that come with sports stardom. What is even more amazing is that he has done it with flair. Not that there is anything wrong with boring, just see our Tim Duncan article here:
However, there are very few athletes who have exhibited the level of classiness and pizazz that Derek Jeter has. Michael Jordan is the first to come to mind. Unfortunately, the sports landscape is full of athletes with flair and pizazz, but lack even a shred of class.

What is not talked about is how today’s sports culture breeds and even encourages classless behavior. Many of today’s athletes are swept up in their own hype. Then they blindly walk (or actually high step) down the road to a wasteland full of athletes who never lived up to their own propaganda. They are not alone on that road, for they are escorted by many enablers who feed their appetite for fame, money and even drugs.

Derek Jeter has looked at that road and made a quick detour. For that we name him our “athlete you would let your daughter date” and apparently there have been many fathers who gave their blessing.

Please take a look at Derek Jeter’s charity:

Yes, it is a shame that Jeter is the exception rather than the norm. We can only continue to support the Jeter-type athletes and ignore the Johnny Football’s of the sports world.

I’m not a big Yankees fan, but it’s hard to dislike Jeter. He has always handled everything professionally. I hope kids today watch him and take notes. Class act on and off the field. Wish he was a Bravo…I guess we will have to settle with Simmons! 😉

Agree, hard to cheer for the yanks, but always pulled for Jeter. Perfectly happy to settle with Simmons, possible the best fielding SS in the League!
